Grand Rapids is in Itasca County. There are over 1 million acres of publicly accessible forest land in Itasca County. There are over 2,000 miles of hiking trails within the forests. A couple of great hiking trails to consider are:

    1. Legion Trail this trail would be considered easy to moderate trail skill level. The Legion trail system has hiking, biking and disc golf in the 8 miles of mixed forest trail. In the winter there is cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at Legion. This trail is located right in the city limits of Grand Rapids. Several clubs help maintain the trails: Grand Rapids and Itasca Mountain Bike Association and Northern Lights Nordic Ski Association. This is a fun, flowy and twisty forest trail that wraps around Hale Lake.
    2. Simpson Creek located in the Chippewa National Forest at the Cut Foot Sioux information area is a 13 mile trail that is easy level. This mostly flat terrane is perfect for children and families. Overlook areas of Cut Foot Sioux Lake and over a cedar bog area. Spring is a perfect time to see eagles on Cut Foot Sioux Lake hunting for fish
