    FISHING REPORT

Weekly Fishing Report by: Tom Neustrom

    5-20-2026

Opening weekend was not as in years past. Air temp was chilly and water temperatures were lower than normal. Walleyes were in the middle spawn. So, when fishing for walleyes with a jig and minnow, you must fish slowly and methodically. Cannot pop the jig, and those trolly did not do as well as pitching on spots. A suggestion is to put your  bough mounts on spot lock and throw them to rock piles and points. Using lighter jigs is key to getting a bite. 1/16 ounce and 1/8-ounce jigs are important to have with you. Things will get better. The spot tail shiners have not begun spawning yet and we look to the next two weeks to get better as the water temperature starts to warm up. Some walleye lakes to try Splithand, Pokegama, Mississippi River, Big Cut Foot, Winnie.

The panfish fishing has been good. A lot of people have caught nice crappies. That is also a good thing to have when the walleye fishing isn’t as good right now. Small jig and minnow or jig and plastic under a split bobber in 2-6’ of water. The perch fishing has been slower than normal but look for that to pick up as well, as water temperatures start to warm up. You can find them now on shallow rockpiles now for a couple of weeks. Small jig and crappie minnow is the best delivery. Move 20-20 yards if not catching in that spot. Some crappie lakes to try in Itasca County are Splithand, Little Moose, Little Cut Foot, and Round.
