Day 1 Great River Road


Drive in on the Great River Road to Grand Rapids from the west (Bemidji to Grand Rapids is approximately 69 miles) or from the south (Brainerd is approximately 81 miles). Both routes are beautiful in the fall with the mixed hardwoods and pines.
The Great River Road offers you the opportunity to get off the beaten path (side roads) for a scenic drive through small towns that offer lots of charm. Communities like Brainerd, Deerwood, Aitkin, Jacobson, Bemidji, Cass Lake, Deer River, and Grand Rapids offer things to do, and places to see, eat & drink, and shop at. You will discover uniqueness in each community that makes them stand out.

Day 2 Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway


This scenic byway is the oldest in the state of Minnesota. It starts in Grand Rapids and runs 47 miles to Effie, Minnesota. This curvy and windy road is perfect to take it slow and enjoy the scenery, stop at historic sites, and enjoy a good place to eat & drink. The Edge of the Wilderness has mixed hardwood and pines forests that wind in between beautiful area lakes and tamarack and balsam bogs. This makes for the perfect fall drive tour.

Day 3 Avenue of the Pines Scenic Byway


This scenic byway is a little bit more straight than the Edge of the Wilderness, but still offers wonderful scenic and historic sites. This byway starts in Deer River and runs to Northome, Minnesota (approximately 41 miles). Drive among 200+ year old white and red pine trees. This byway is located within the Chippewa National Forest as well, and within the Leech lake Band of Ojibwe Reservation. There are many places to stop to eat & drink, historic sites, and outdoor recreation trails and lake areas.
