There are many FREE things to do in the fall in Grand Rapids. Fall is a perfect time of year to come to Grand Rapids. The crowds are less, the temperatures are perfect for sweatshirts, and the colors are stunning. Here are some FREE things to do while in Grand Rapids in the fall time of year:
The fall colors in the Grand Rapids area are beautiful! There is over 1 million acres of public accessible forest land in Itasca County. You will find a good mix of hardwoods of many colors, pines and bog areas filled with golden tamaracks. Check out the FREE Fall Leaves Color Tour Map that showcases four scenic drives where you will see beautiful fall colors. Along the way you will also find several way side rests, restaurants and bars and grills.
Grand Rapids has a wide variety of live music options every week. On Wednesday’s there is Live Jazz at the VFW. The first Friday of each month is First Friday Art Walk which is a FREE event that showcases artists and musicians in downtown businesses. Every weekend there is Live Music at Klockow Brewing Company and Eagles in Grand Rapids. Every Sunday there is acoustic live music at the Locker Room. Pickled Loon and Zorbaz also have live music on a regular basis as well. Check out the Events Calendar for each week’s live music.
The Grand Rapids Arts has a FREE public art map that was created to help people take their own self-guided tour of the town’s public art. Grand Rapids has a rich and diverse art and culture scene. Most of this art has been created and located in public locations in downtown Grand Rapids. The Grand Rapids Public Art is a mapped walking tour of sculptures, murals, mosaics, and other artwork in downtown Grand Rapids. The other locations to view FREE public art is MacRostie Art Center (FREE art gallery that showcases local and Minnesota based artists work, make sure to look at our Events Calendar to view their FREE exhibit events), Brewed Awakening (a cafe that has regular live music, and monthly art exhibits on its walls), The Reif Center (performing arts center that showcases a new local artists in its lobby every month), and Grand Itasca Hospital & Clinic (one of our wonderful medical facilities in Grand Rapids has many different local artists work on its walls for public view).
In Grand Rapids we are very blessed to have the Itasca County Historical Museum that offers FREE admission to everyone. This museum is a hidden gem that has wonderful displays and exhibits that will take you back in time. If you are into history, you definitely will want to make time in your vacation itinerary to stop here. Every few months they create a new exhibit. Right now the new exhibit is Picture Grace which highlights the state of Minnesota picture Grace that was taken by a local photographer in Bovey Minnesota.
Biking & Hiking
Grand Rapids is a bronze bicycle friendly city. Get Fit Itasca offers a FREE bike share program where people can check out a bike, just like checking out a library book. Locations of these bikes are: Itasca YMCA, City Hall, Grand Rapids Area Library, and Itasca Resource Center. The City of Grand Rapids has many bike and walking trails created to enjoy for FREE, CLICK HERE to download maps. You might also want to check out the Mesabi Trail which is over 60 miles of contiguous paved biking, hiking, running and walking trail.
