White tail deer hunters can find a prime location within a short drive of Grand Rapids, although some research work is required in advance to find the right location on public lands. The mixed hardwood forests and numerous lakes provide excellent habitat for white tail deer.

The Grand Rapids, Minnesota is prime for upland birds like ducks, geese, Grouse and woodcock. Surrounding the Grand Rapids area there are over 1 million publicly accessible acre and there are thousands of area lakes for public hunting. There is the UPM Blandin Forests, Chippewa National Forest, George Washington State Forest, and many additional thousands of tax forfeit lands that have been designated for public access for outdoor recreation, hunting and fishing.
Itasca County is one of the ruffed grouse and woodcock because of the low to medium dense shrubs and young trees and mixed young hardwoods that would connect to open areas (designated trails) with similar mixed forest and shrubs and young trees. Because of rich logging in the Grand Rapids, MN area many trails are naturally created, and maintained by Ruffed Grouse Society Clubs, MN DNR, and Itasca County Land Department.Â

Private Property Hunting…it’s a privilege: The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Regulations Handbook, require hunters to get permission to hunt agricultural land. Also, hunters can’t hunt any posted private land unless they have written permission, and they can’t hunt land if they’ve been told to leave. To find out if unmarked land is private, inquire at the county auditor’s office.
