Scenic Byway and Roadside Attractions Tour

Grand Rapids is home to the first designated Scenic Byway in Minnesota: the Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway which runs from the Mississippi River to the American Falls in Ely. This route was once used by voyageurs and loggers through the Chippewa National Forest, over rolling hills, and past bogs and fishing lakes. Much of the 47-mile drive that connects Grand Rapids to Effie was reconstructed in recent years, promising a smooth ride and spectacular scenery - from historic sites and lumberjack-influenced small towns to bald eagles and balsam firs.

Grand Rapids is proud to be a Mississippi River town. The river runs right through historic downtown. Minnesota’s Great River Road is a designated All-American Road offering a bounty of river experiences in a parkway setting. It spans 565 miles, 43 communities, 20 counties, three tribes, and six unique destination areas featuring iconic scenic reaches that provide access to and tell the stories of America’s Great Mississippi River.Grand Rapids is a part of two sections of the Great River Road MN. The Northwoods region follows the river through Bemidji, Cass, Winnibigoshish and Pokegama — mighty lakes, with mighty good fishing. Discover the stories of the Ojibwe and the history of the lumberjacks. Visit Grand Rapids to tour the paper mill, Forest History Center and Judy Garland’s birthplace. People of the Crossings region have traveled the Mississippi for centuries. Today it plays host to thousands of vacationers each year who bike, golf, fish, bird or simply seek respite. Travel 47 miles from Deer River to Northome along the gorgeous Avenue of Pines Scenic Byway. With the help of the U.S. Forest Service, the byway was established in 1989 to provide outdoor enthusiasts easier access to this beautiful area in northern Minnesota. Along the byway, set your gaze on pine trees lining the road that date back almost 400 years. For a slower perspective, visitors can stop by the Lost 40 State Natural Area and Forest Service recreation sites and hike a short loop for better viewing of these majestic trees. The Byway goes through a large part of the Chippewa National Forest.
