Experience 1 Time At The Beach


On warm summer days going to the beach is definitely a must. Kids love to play in the sand and swim in the lake. Many Resorts offer on site private beaches that are available to guests only. There are many beaches around the Grand Rapids, MN area. Remember to pack a lunch, a cooler with lots of water, sunscreen, beach towels, and beach chairs for the adults to relax at the beach as well. None of the beaches have lifeguards - so please watch children carefully and swim at your own risk. Our top picks:

Tour the historic sites around Grand Rapids that are family friendly for all ages: the Forest History Center is perfect for the family to enjoy a Great Northern Forest History Tour, take a guided Mississippi Paddle in a tandem or single kayak tour (kids 10-15 must be accompanied by an adult), kids love to walk up the fire tower to enjoy the view, and make sure you leave time to stop and spend time in the forest interpretive center that is included in the general admission.

Experience 3 Judy Garland + Children’s Discovery Museum


Purchasing dual admission to the Judy Garland and Children’s Discovery Museum offers something for the entire family. Adults enjoy touring the Judy Garland Museum to view the largest Judy Garland and Wizard of Oz memorabilia in the upper Midwest, and touring the Judy Garland home that was moved and preserved as it would have been in the 1920’s. Visitors can take in guided tours at an additional charge. The Children’s Discovery Museum offers room for kids to roam, discover and play in the multiple youth specific exhibits like lake life, interactive exhibits like Teresa the talking tree, water table and Oz Town.

Children school aged and their parents will enjoy being in nature at the parks and playgrounds in and around Grand Rapids. The City of Grand Rapids keep the parks and playgrounds well maintained and have made upgrades to the equipment. Pack a lunch and a cooler with water, and don’t forget sunscreen. They all offer places to sit and enjoy lunch at picnic tables, but packing camp chairs will provide for a more comfortable way to watch the kids play.
