Winter Lecture Series: Spirits Dancing

For millennia, humans have marveled at the night sky: the wonder of the aurora borealis, the glory of the Milky Way, and the peace that comes with stargazing. In this presentation, Travis Novitsky will share Indigenous peoples’ understanding of, and relationship to the night sky. He will discuss his craft and process as a photographer, including information about his equipment, the role of weather, and how changing technology has impacted his technique. There will be time for questions at the end of his presentation.
Travis Novitsky has decades of experience as a nature and wildlife photographer, and has been photographing the night sky for decades. He is an enrolled member of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, living in Grand Portage, Minnesota.
