Fun with tree bark—how it grows and ways to use it! At MacRostie Art Center

from 40.00

Instructor: John Zasada

Date: Saturday, June 25

Time: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Tree bark is really special. It protects trees in interesting and mysterious ways and is key to tree health and vigor. The class will be conducted both in the woods and in the shop. The tree species of interest will be paper birch, basswood, and cedar. During the two days we will consider: how trees grow and in particular how bark develops normally and following damage; how bark is harvested; and preparation and use of bark for making rope, twine, braid, baskets, tar, flour, and other things in which folks might be interested. The class will be at John Zasada’s home near Grand Rapids, MN and one week before the class begins directions will be emailed to participants. We will talk about getting permits and various aspects of harvesting bark but only the objects created will be available to take home and not the harvested bark. If you are only able to attend one day, that will be fine and the first day will be the most important. Proof of vaccination or negative COVID test required.
