HISTORY
On December 22, 1890 the LaPrairie voters approved village incorporation. The census at that time was 230 in this thriving, logging community at the confluence of the Mississippi and Prairie Rivers. On November 19, 1892 Grand Rapids defeated LaPrairie in the County seat election, which the LaPrairie Mayor claimed was fraudulent. A national economic depression hit in 1893, the hospital moved to Grand Rapids and the railroad line expanded from LaPrairie to Grand Rapids, leaving LaPrairie with a city population of 21. The LaPrairie City Council quit meeting in 1911; it was reactivated on May 3, 1948. In 1980, the population was 536 and today the population is 665. (excerpts taken from LaPrairie, the Road Back by Dick Cain).
