Grand Rapids MN Fishing Report 5-20-20

This week’s Grand Rapids Fishing Report written by: Tom Neustrom, professional fishing guide and professional fishing industry representative. Tom owns MN Fishing Connections. If you are looking for an memorable fishing trip, call Tom.

We have finally turned up the heat and the overall fishing for several species continues to improve. Walleye fishing in particular is better each day and the water temperatures continue to rise slowly. Bib and Little Winnie have been producing walleyes in 6-12 feet of water on a jig and shiner minnow. Also several anglers are spot locking with their Minnkota Ulterra or Terrova Bow Mount trolling motor on break lines and inside turns of structure and using slip bobbers and leeches or a minnow. This has been very effective especially where the wind is blowing in. Many anglers are also trolling crank baits in the evening just before dark and doing quite well. In the Grand Rapids area we have several lakes that offer excellent walleye fishing such as Bowstring, Jessie, and Big Splithand lakes.

The Mississippi River in the Deer River area has also been very good for walleyes of late. Again a jig and rainbow chub has been working effectively. For the fisherman chasing northern pike the opportunities are also endless. Pokegama, Big Spider, and Big Winnie have been kicking out nice northerns in the 3-8 pound range with an occasional trophy over 10 pounds. Northern pike are not fussy and many presentations will work, A jig and minnow will work good along new emerging weed lines and remember to tie up a length of 20# monofilament leader as not to get bit off. Northern Pike are one of the best eating fish around and learning how to filet and take the Y bone out is important.

Next time you’re in the fish house and a local guide is there, ask him to show you how to take the Y bone out of a Northern. It will be one of the beat cleaning lessons you will ever learn. Enjoy the holiday coming up and make sure you don’t gather in large groups and keep practicing social distancing.

We encourage you to head north this summer for an awesome fishing trip that you will always remember! Search Grand Rapids Lodging Properties HERE.
