Grand Rapids Fishing Report 5-14-19
This week’s Grand Rapids Fishing Report brought to you by Tom Neustrom, owner of professional fishing guide service: MN Fishing Connections.
The 2019 Fishing Opener has come and gone with relative good fishing on several area lakes. Walleye fishing was good on several lakes and anglers were happy with their results. Some of the better lakes for success were Big and Little Cutfoot, Winnie, Bowstring, Little Winnie, and the Mississippi River.
Jig and minnow was the top producer with medium leeches under a slip bobber a close second. With water temperatures in the low to mid 40’s moving your bit slowewr was the best presentation and accounted for most of the walleyes that were put in the boat. In the evening hours some anglers trolled Floating Rapalas and Shad Raps with some success. As the water starts to warm up, look for the bite to get better and better.
Crappie fishing was good on several lakes and look for that to improve in the days to come. Shallow bays connected to the main lake are the key spots for they hsve wster temperatures 4-5 degrees warmer. Small jigs and a small minnow or plastic can be all you need. Depths of 2-4 feet are your best option. A soft tip rod like the St. Croix Legend Elite Crappie Series is a great choice. Light weight and lots of muscle to pull those spring crappies to the boat is a necessity. Keep moving until you find active fish. Most often the last 2 hours of daylight are your best choices, but can be taken at different hours of the day. Find the calmest water available and you’re in business. Walleyes, Northern Pike, Perch and crappies are species that anglers chase early and throughout the season. Good Luck.
