Grand Rapids Dog Days of Summer Fishing Report 8-8-19

Two nice Northerns caught by Loon Point Resort guests.

“The dog days of fishing at times make people more in tune with what they want to catch and eat”. – Tom Neustrom, owner of professional fishing guide service, MN Fishing Connections. Read Tom’s Grand Rapids Dog Days of Summer Fishing Report below:
Many people that want to bend the rod and get a great meal of fish to eat don’t realize the value of Northern Pike. Many an angler will tell you that a northern on the other end of your line will definitely fight well and bend the rod. Once brought to the dock, removing the Y bone has always been a little tricky, but when learned, it provides one of the best eating fish around.
Whether fried, grilled, or blackened, they will provide a great meal. Not difficult to catch and are attracted to many styles of fishing, many times the flashier the better. One of the favorite ways to cook northern pike is to soak the filets in a 50-50 mix of 7-Up and Terriyaki for 2 hours in the refridgerator, then drain. Cook on grill approximately 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove and serve with lemon wedges and enjoy.

Some of the good northern pike lakes in the Grand Rapids area are Big Winnie, Pokegama, Trout, Ball Club, Spider and several others. Bass fishing continues to be good on area lakes and both smallmouth and largemouth have been providing good action for anglers. For the small boaters, the Mississippi River below Grand Rapids can provide some excellent opportunities for smallmouth bass on topwater and spinner baits. It’s a beautiful float trip that you will enjoy. Summer fishing has many opportunities left so make sure you enjoy what the Grand Rapids area has to offer.
