This week’s Grand Rapids Fishing Report by Tom Neustrom, owner of MN Fishing Connections professional guide service. Tom has been inducted into the MN Fishing Hall of Fame, and also the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame.
Its been a great start of the 2019 Fishing season and anglers are doing well for walleyes on area lakes. Jig and a shiner or chub has been the ticket and for the real finicky walleyes a slip sinker on a plain hook dragged slowly has also been producing.
Make sure when you are setting up a slip sinker rig to have a 3-5 foot snell leader of 8-10 pound test monofilament with a size 2 or 4 VMC live bait hook. Fish with an open bail allowing the walleye to swim freely with your bait before setting the hook. It can be a deadly combination when the walleyes want to be tight jawed.
Some of the lakes in the Grand Rapids area that are producing walleyes are Moose, Bowstring, Big Winnie, Big Cutfoot, Splihand, and the Mississippi River. Crappie fishing has also been good and will continue to get better is the next few weeks.
Northern Pike have been biting and there have been reports of some real lunkers coming in, Many times when walleye fishing , anglers and catching nice pike in the same areas where walleyes are being caught. Just remember to take the Y bone out and northern pike are as good a eating fish as any. Hope everyone has a great Memorial Day weekend and be safe. The landings tend to be very busy so have patience and help out when possible. Good luck.
