Old Central School will be hosting Earth Month for the First Friday Art Walk on Friday, May 3, 2019. Ashley Brubaker, building manager and owner of True North Salon & Spa has been creating events that partner with local businesses and organizations to bring people back to the school.
“We have partnered with amazing vendors and environmental groups who will help show you how we care about our northern waters and wilderness,” shares Brubaker. “This beautiful architecturally designed building has a lot of possibilities. My goal is to create a space where people want to be.” Since Brubaker moved into the building over 5 years ago, she has been instrumental in creating partnerships and working with the City of Grand Rapids (owner of the building) to work on more marketing and promotion, creating fun activities and events in the building, and reaching out to at home businesses, farmers market vendors, artists, musicians to offer a low cost pop-up shop opportunity to showcase their business. The Friends of the Grand Rapids Area Library are hosting a Pop-Up Book Shop filled with hundreds of gently used books. All proceeds benefit special Library projects and programs.
The Grand Rapids Area Earth Circle raises awareness and inspires action on issues affecting the environment. They will be showcasing art made from recycled objects as well as information on how to create pollinator gardens. Free popcorn, lemonade and coffee will be available. **This will also be available on Saturday from 9am-3pm.**
Celebrate the 2019 Leafy Greens World Tour with One Vegetable, One Community -Itasca County! Decorate your own row marker, try some greens, and take some seeds home to plant. RE ⤻ pop-up thrift store will offering a variety of vintage and gently used clothing and home goods! **This will also be available on Saturday from 9am-3pm. Wine Creations will be offering samples. MDI will offer insight into the world of recycling. Baby Steps will be holding a children’s coloring contest!! Step Ahead Clothing Co.. will be open offering a wide range of gently used kids and maternity clothing. MNDNR Division of Ecological and Water Resources staff as well as Division of Forestry staff will be on hand to showcase the local Scientific and Natural Areas and private land owner information. Free Range Food Co-op will be selling t shirts and talking about becoming an owner! Embrace Mental Health is hosting artist Teya who owns Simple Things Jewelry and Art. Wildland Fabrics will be offering reusable bags made from her beautiful variety of fabrics. Itasca Waters will be giving away copies of the 2018 Shoreland Guide for Lake Stewardship and providing information on the new Shoreland Advisors program. Grand Rapids High School “Green Team” will be engaging community members on the importance of environmental friendly practices through education, awareness, and action. The Girl Scouts will be hosting an art project for kids. Willow Sedge Farm offers locally-raised meats; Grass-fed beef and lamb, pastured pork and poultry — outstanding flavor from happy animals will be available for purchase in the OCS parking lot! Ashley Goodman has her own line
of organic and vegan skin care including an itch balm made from the plantain in her yard! Kent Lorentzen will be offering homemade lefse and crafts such as cribbage boards and other wood art. Apothecary Chocolate and Yoga, Massage and tea by Lynnette will have handmade artisan raw chocolate available in a variety of flavors! There will also be a display set up by MacRostie Art Center and the Artists will be in the Attic!
