Dinner:
Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway –
take a drive up Highway 38, which offers some of
the most beautiful forest and lakeshore vistas in
Minnesota, as well as numerous historic sites.
Interpretive maps are available for each person on
your bus. Check out some possible locations for
picnic lunch (with Pasties from Pasties Plus);
travel north to Marcell, then west on County Rd
286 (left); then back south on Hwy 6 (another
left). This will bring you into Deer River |
| Evening:
White Oak Casino (218.335.4300) the casino
makes for a nice option after Showboat in the
summer (last three weekends in July) if you plan a
trip at that time. |

| Second Day |
| 9:00 am: Tour
Judy Garland Birthplace
(800.664.5839) a two-story house which has been
restored to reflect the years between 1919 and
1926 when the Gumm family resided in Grand Rapids.
Baby Gumm, later known as Judy Garland, began
entertaining here at age two. |
| 10:00 am:
Visit the Zion Lutheran Church
(218.326.8553) features stained glass windows
depicting the parables. Address: 2901 S Hwy 169 –
just a block south of Judy Garland’s Birthplace. |
| 10:30 am: Head to
Hill Annex Mine in Calumet
(218.247.7215) offers a guided tour by trolley of
an inactive open pit iron mine. Its conveyor
system, equipment and mine buildings can be viewed
during the tour. |

| On the way there, or back, you could also visit
Nordic Ridge Gardens (the pumpkin patch), Eagle
Ridge golf course, and some of the historic
buildings in Bovey. |

| 1:00p Lunch – Pasties in the park {Pasties Plus, on
US 2, 218.326.2234} We have several nice parks
with pavilions to enjoy a lunch similar to the
miners of old; or visit one of the restaurants
with homemade food such as “Auntie Em’s” in Old
Central School or “Air Espresso II” on Highways 2
and 169 in town. |
| 2:30 pm: Tour of
Central School, (218.326.6431) a
unique marketplace; recapture the spirit of your
youth at a turn-of-the-century schoolhouse.
Central School is located in the middle of town.
MacRostie Art Center, (located just west of
Central School) a non-profit arts organization
dedicated to the exhibition of and education in
the visual arts, featuring spacious gallery with
rotating exhibits. |
3:30 pm: Tour
Forest History Center (218.327.4482)
costumed re-enactors help us step back in time to
life at a 19th Century logging camp. Observe and
chat with the camp blacksmith, saw filer, clerk,
cook and lumberjacks.
7:30 pm: Visit the
Showboat Site live entertainment
is performed here on the banks of the Mississippi
River; seating is handicapped accessible.
Performances are in July and are a popular venue
for group tours.
